Lucy Smith - Wolds Brass Ensemble

Lucy started learning to read music and play the cornet at the age of 4. Coming from a musical family it became quickly apparent that Lucy had a natural aptitude for music. Lucy started playing 3rd cornet in Lofthouse and Middlesmoor Silver Band in Nidderdale, North Yorkshire moving up the ranks onto front row and finally onto flugel horn. At the age of 8 Lucy was given a french horn and instantly developed a strong connection to it achieving Grade 5 ABRSM by the time she started secondary school.

Whilst at secondary school Lucy developed her musical knowledge further by singing with the school chapel choir and playing with the school orchestra and wind band. She also attended the Harrogate and Skipton Music Centre on Saturday mornings, working her way up through the ensembles on french horn before leaving to attend the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, where she studied the french horn under John Logan.

Since leaving the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama Lucy attended Lancaster University to study ethnomusicology and was principle horn for the Haffner Orchestra playing under the baton of Natalia Luis-Bassa.

Lucy has taken every opportunity given to her through playing in musicals and for Preston Opera in several operas including "Samson and Dalilia" and "L’elisir d’amore". She has also stood in as a deputy for orchestras around Cumbria and Lancashire. During her final year at Lancaster University Lucy performed Concerto for Horn No.1 by Richard Strauss with the university orchestra. In her second and third year she conducted the Orchestra and String Orchestra at the Lancaster Community Music Centre where she developed her love for conducting.

Since moving to Lincolnshire in 2013, Lucy has been teacher of music at John Spendluffe Technology College in Alford and is now Subject Leader of Music at Banovallum School in Horncastle. Lucy was Musical Director for Mareham-Le-Fen Victory Silver Band for a year and has appeared with Banovallum Brass on the flugel horn, Bluestones Big Band on trumpet and with Lincolnshire Concert Orchestra and Lincoln Symphony Orchestra on the french horn. Until recently Lucy regularly played flugel horn with Skegness Silver Band, and now enjoys playing french horn with Wolds Brass.
